I think I read it in 1978 and it was first published around that time.
It's the story of a girl in her first term at Bristol University. Her family home is in Harrow. She meets a boy who's a bit of a hippie and moves out of halls and moves into a flat with him in Clifton.
The author is female and British.

Novels Set in Bristol

Not a helpful post Legs!
Surprisingly enough, I did actually put my old addled brain into gear and managed to come up with the brilliant idea to do a bit of Googling before I posted. I didn't find the book I'm referring to which is why I asked here.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 05/10/2012 10:04

Grin Well then bugger off and find it yourself! You rude Panda!

ChippyMinton · 05/10/2012 10:06

I was going to help, but not now. How rude Shock

cocolepew · 05/10/2012 10:09

Well that's you told!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 05/10/2012 10:17

That'll teach you!

BobbiThePanda · 05/10/2012 10:52

Apologies BigFatHairy. I'd already seen the page several days ago when I googled some keywords. Didn't mean to come off stroppy but apparently I did!

I have managed to track the book down anyway.

Forgot to give the book info Confused

It's called 'You Must Be Sisters' and it's by Deborah Moggach. It's a 'rite of passage' type novel. I imagine it will be very dated now though.

First you're rude and now you call me BigFatHAIRY Shock Grin when I am obviously "BigFat" and not hairy!

Apology accepted.

Clearly, I was thinking of my own legs! How to mess up an apology. Grin All those years at charm school were totally wasted.

Grin Poor panda and poor she's not hairy fatlegs. Sorry you 2, but this is very funny!
2blessed2bstressed · 05/10/2012 11:32

Is it maybe something by Lynne Reid Banks?

BobbiThePanda · 05/10/2012 11:55

Helpyourself it's ok I'm laughing too now. I was mortified when I re-read that post, I didn't intend it to sound so stroppy. Then I apologise and I mess that up too by throwing in an insult!

2blessed - it's ok I found the author, thank you, it's Deborah Maggoch. But your mention of Lynne Reid Banks has reminded me of how much I enjoyed The L Shaped Room when I read that many years ago. May have to look for that one too!

Thanks everyone and again I am sorry for how rude that post came across.

This is thread is unintentionally very funny!

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 05/10/2012 12:03

[checks legs]

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 10/10/2012 11:47

I always loved the L shaped room, then years later I found the two sequels and they are DIRE - so sanctimonious and preachy and utter drivelling shite :( very disappointing!
