FFS, I want to find a new book to read.
So sick of this fifty shades of masturbation (and talking about it at work).
Grow up.

What about one about a mass murdering conspiracy theorist who infiltrates a secretive sect only to find them moaning about their abusive childhoods in rural 1950's Scotland? Written by a celebrity chef?
I feel your pain.....no 50 shades allusion meant there, btw Grin

thatlldopigthatlldo · 09/09/2012 22:49

Grin Quite!

maybe everyone else is too busy reading to reply Wink

CoteDAzur · 11/09/2012 07:52

I'm with you, OP.

Having said that, Bestsellers list was never a great place to find good books. (remembering such hooters as Memory Keeper's Daughter and Book Thief, for example)

thatlldopigthatlldo · 11/09/2012 20:42

true, but even if i search contemporary fiction it's mostly porn.
it wasn't this way 6 months ago was it?

And badly written porn to boot

BustleInYourHedgerow · 12/09/2012 06:53

It's entirely DH's cousin's fault. Everytime I see her recommend a book on fb, because it's omg totally like 50 shades except without Christian lols I see it on the book chart the following week. It's intruiging, I'd never realised how influential she is.

Stellarella123 · 12/09/2012 06:58

Iv just read the hunger games. Was really good,

Also : martina cole- the family,
Iv been recomended to read :

  • a thousand splendid suns - khaled hussieni
  • The help.
CoteDAzur · 12/09/2012 07:24

Don't get me started on 1,000 Splendid Suns. Pop sob-story, written by an American in English, to bank on the "Oooh Afghan women suffer so much!" thing. It's like a book about the US written by an Arab in Arabic, that talks only about hamburgers.

Bizarrely ignorant of Afghanistan and Islam, probably because its author hasn't set food there since his moved to California when he was 8 years old. So he has actually never lived under the Taliban. Author seems to think the Muslim call to prayer is only once a day (it's 5 times a day) and the name "Maryam" means "tube rose" (more significantly, it means Mary, mother of Jesus). There is an entire chapter in the Quran named after her fgs Hmm

Stellarella123 · 12/09/2012 07:36

Oh well il give that one a miss! Grin

CoteDAzur · 12/09/2012 07:37

I can go on, if you wish Grin

thatlldopigthatlldo · 12/09/2012 09:20

true, a thousand splendid sons didn't quite hit the spot did it.

have just finished 'a fine balance' by Rohinton Mistry and really reallly enjoyed it. Beautifully written.

Just can't find my next read. Considering 'a suitable boy' by Vikram Seth, but not sure i want to commit to such a big read right now. would prefer something a bit lighter.

I second Cote who is bang on the money about 1000 suns Grin

But I'm enjoying all the porn, and I don't care if it's badly written. And neither should you - it's porn.

solidgoldbrass · 13/09/2012 19:59

There are loads of good books around, just go into a book shop (a proper book shop) and have a rummage. Who cares what other people are reading?

KatieScarlett2833 · 13/09/2012 20:03

I've just bought 4 books from Amazon after recommendations on MN.

The book chart is for people who buy all their books in Asda and Tesco.

thatlldopigthatlldo · 13/09/2012 20:50

have ordered
A suitable boy
The god of small things
Memoirs of a Geisha

and picked up Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver in a charity shop.

Used amazon reviews and goodreads to help. But there's definitely more trawling required for buying online books now with all the free kindle guff and new interest in porn out there.
