Help! This has been driving me slightly bonkers. I can't remember the name of the book or the author (I thought it was Frederick Forsyth, but it doesn't seem to be). All I really remember is that the hero is captured near the end in Russia, and scheduled to be executed, but somehow an old friend who owes him a favour swaps places with him, and is executed in his place. I have a vague feeling that they may be American, and possibly the favour is because of something that happened in the Vietnam War. Maybe. It's also entirely possible that they are British and I'm thinking of something else there...

Any ideas..this is really driving me crazy!!

No idea, sorry. Sounds like a Tale of Two Cities but in other places /other times... Hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes along soon!

Is it "The 11th Commandment" by Jeffrey Archer?

www.jeffreyarcher.co.uk/site/the_eleventh_commandment

CIA man gets set up by awful women boss, is captured and about to be executed, CIA deny all knowledge of him, ex-colleague and old friend (whose life our hero saved in Vietnam), swaps places with him (via dodgy deal with Russian Mafia) so he can go back to the States and get even with his evil boss while trying not to assassinate the President (which the Russian mafia order him to do in exchange for letting him live).

Phew. Good book actually.
