Fifty shades of garbage.....

Just going through the amazon top 100 books trying to download a new read and I swear every second book is a fifty shades rip off, for example: For his taking, The submission of miss masters. Anything he wants, Dominated by a billionaire. The adultery club, In an often grey world there are fifty shades of grey. Bared to you. The bride bared naked. Seriously has 50 shades released every womans inner nymph. Fifty shades of shite is bad enough without being subjected to a host of copy cat wannabe soft porn novels badly written and hastily flung together to capitalise on a new hopefully fleeting trend. Please please end this awful anti feminist, sadomasochistic trend before the suffragettes turn in their graves and take back our vote! End of rant, ps downloaded before I go to sleep if anyone's interested, I trust old Richard and Judy better than an endorsement from More magazine..

I was thinking this last night! It's annoying having to sift through all the rubbish to find something worth reading.

WerthersUnOriginal · 19/08/2012 14:23

Gawd that 50 shades junk is awful. I couldn't get past the sample I downloaded from Kindle. It makes me think of that mass produced pulp porn written for the proles in '1984'.

pumpkinsweetie · 19/08/2012 14:29

I haven't read it and don't intend to.
I have heard that its all about the control over the woman, and the woman enjoys the thrill of it-why???
People watch porn or read literotica when horny, why would anyone want to sift through endless drivel to get their kicks off. Its not even as if the story sounds remotely romantic, so i just don't get it Confused

i finished the 3 rd book last week ,what a waste of a summer ,
found the books hard to read as i became quiet bored and skipped a lot of pages to tell the truth .

theonewiththenoisychild · 29/08/2012 14:00

I've read them didn't feel comfortable about the first other 2 were a bit less uncomfortable to read. But don't get why there's been such a big deal made of it tho

DuchessofMalfi · 29/08/2012 15:00

I won't be reading them. Scanning along the shelves of books in Tesco's a few days ago, so many of them seemed to be FSOG or similar.

Scotty - I'm afraid I didn't think much of Before I Go To Sleep either, sorry. I thought it could have been better. However, I would recommend The Book of Summers by Emylia Hall - another Richard & Judy book choice. It was lovely. I'm now reading Jubilee by Shelley Harris (yet another R&J choice Blush). I tend to like their choices, but don't read all of them.

have to confess to not reading '50 shades', but I asked a friend who had read it if she would think it a bit pervy if it was written by a man.........not a woman....and she said 'yes'..

acertainage · 04/09/2012 19:02

I have read them. The style is classic romance or erotica. If you are interested in that style of book then you will like them. I'm not sure why they have become so popular when that style is not very popular. I use to read Romance when I was a teenager so did not mind them. My mum loves romance so loved reading them. It seems to work to help spice up your sex life!My mum was telling me Waterstones and WHsmith have both managed to do OK with book sales because of these books so in that sense that can't be a bad thing.

thriftymom · 07/09/2012 11:20

I have to say that I could not see what all the fuss is about this book. I finished it a few weeks back and wasn't that impressed really. Each to their own though.

greenhill · 07/09/2012 11:27

I've also been finding that most of the free Kindle books are free for a reason...nobody would pay for them if in the paid section.

I can see the point of an author putting the first in a series out for free, so that if you like it, you are more likely to pay for the next. But I've downloaded too many duds recently and am likely to go back to searching by trusted author or using recommendations from these pages (and then reading the samples first)...

lisa2104 · 10/09/2012 13:36

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! People at work were raving about it even the usually sensible girl with half a brain who normally favours Game Of Thrones. I admit I enjoy a bit of Jackie Collins but her books do at least have a bit of a story and she doesn't take herself too seriously. Befroe I Go To Sleep is an excellent book-let me know what you think!

lisa2104 · 10/09/2012 13:36

oh and I did try the Kindle sample by the way but thought it was terrible

gabsid · 18/09/2012 13:43

I have just finished it, wanted to see what all the fuss is about, and also I have never read any erotica before but if everyone reads it...

I liked the sex bits in the first and second book. Not sure I agree with all those feminists shouting, it all seems to be a bit of a game - taken a bit too far in the story obviously.

In the third book I skipped quite a bit and got bored of the repetition and style of writing, sentences seem to be no longer then 10 words max.

pew2011 · 22/09/2012 09:10

YESSSS I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!! My friends at work LOVE this book and I couldnt stand it! It really creeped me out and the whole story was so boring. I started to skip the sex sceens because I was bored of reading them.
