Pleasantly shocked! I've read 22 books so far in 2012....

I joined a book club last year which meets about 10 times a year. I was very excited as I thought if I read those 10 plus the few that I read when we are on holiday then all well and good, happy to be reading more than the paltry few I have managed in recent years.

Was absolutely Shock Shock Shock to tally up today on my Goodreads.com account that I have read no less than 22 books so far since January!!!!

Not a lot of point to this post, other than simply wanting to share the fact with somebody! (and no, absolutely no "Shades" books in there at all.....)

I'll be finishing number 32 today. I just decided to keep a list of what I read for my own curiosity. I don't know what Goodreads is but will check it out.

AnneOfCleavers · 18/07/2012 16:11

There's a mumsnet Goodreads group if you want to join www.goodreads.com/group/show/59438-mumsnet-unofficial

And well done on your reading :D

Sirzy · 18/07/2012 16:13

What's this good reads thing?

I am just finishing number 13 since I got my kindle last month.

AnonymousBird · 18/07/2012 16:15

Oo, thanks for that.

I quite like Goodreads - just a handy way of keeping track of what I am reading and putting what I want to read in order of preference!! (which my kindle WON'T allow me to do!)

simbo - impressed!! More than one a week is going some....

It's a book website where you can keep track of books, read book reviews and get recommendations.

AnonymousBird · 18/07/2012 16:16

I have set up my own page on www.goodreads.com. You can review and see what everyone else thinks, but for me, I just use it as a tool for myself at the moment.

And it is very user friendly!

Yes I like how user friendly it is.

I tried another website like it (I think it was called Library Thing) but I just didn't get on with it. I much prefer Goodreads.

NoraHelmer · 18/07/2012 17:58

I'm staggered that I've read over 50 books so far this year.

I like that you can set yourself a challenge to read a certain number of books in a year, can organise the books you've read into categories, and get recommendations for different books. The more books you enter onto the website, the better the recommendations get as they see what you like to read. I've picked up quite a few recommendations for reading so far this year.

There's loads of different book clubs you can join on there. I belong to the Mumsnet Unofficial one and a few others too, some of which have a monthly book read and discussion.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/07/2012 20:27

I read at least two a week and often more, though some of them are re-reads. Thanks for the Good Reads tip - will investigate immediately!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/07/2012 20:29

Oh I'm already on it! How do I use it to list what I've read (not that I can actually remember them all)?

juneybean · 19/07/2012 00:56

I love goodreads, I finished book 76 today, my 2012 aim was 50, I upped it to 75 and last week upped it to 100!

juneybean · 19/07/2012 00:57

remus search your books and under the picture there's a button that says "add to my books" and you can change it to read, currently reading or to read.

juneybean · 19/07/2012 01:00

Just to continue my spamming! I hope I don't come across like I'm bragging with my 76 but I only started reading again last year after a long hiatus so I'm really impressed with myself Grin

simbo · 19/07/2012 11:37

ok, so I've joined Goodreads, but can't work out how to tell it what I am currently reading. Any help?

MattDamonIsMyLover · 19/07/2012 11:43

Which was the best book so far?

AnonymousBird · 19/07/2012 11:51

Hard to say the best, but five stars given to:

The Thread Victoria Hislop
Memoirs of a Fruitcake Chris Evans
Nothing to Envy Barbara Demick
Diamond Star Halo Tiffany Murray

simbo - on the homepage there should be a section with "currently reading" and you go in and select your book and it then appears on your home page every time. I kind of found my way round site by trial and error. Use your cursor and "hover" over things and you should be given an option to tick "to read" "reading" or "read". Sorry, I can't remember exactly how I first found it, but it is all there, I promise!

OP posts:
simbo · 19/07/2012 12:05

I'll keep on playing around with it. The site just kicked me out as it was "over capacity".

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2012 19:44

Thanks Juney - but how can it keep a log of what I've actually read from now on, rather than books I've read generally?

My best read this year has been, 'All Quiet On The Western Front' - haven't read anything else since Christmas that has come anywhere close to how good that was.

juneybean · 19/07/2012 19:59

Oh in the same way, if you're currently reading one, set it to "currently reading" and it'll show up on your main page.

You can edit it by clicking "Update Status" and if you've finished you can click "I'm finished" and it'll bring up a box asking you to review it. I usually just give it stars rather than writing a full review.

It'll then count towards your 2012 goal if you've created one.

Hope this helps but I'm not very good at explaining things!

quirrelquarrel · 21/07/2012 14:08

About 90 for me, but then I am an almost-student type and v. libre at the moment! And even when school was still going, how to fill all this empty study break? Will I be pleased when I get a D in German this summer? Hmm....

I write them all down by hand, with date- my mum and I decided I should at Christmas, just to see.

grannyperv · 24/07/2012 20:36

So glad I looked at this thread. I did not realise that there was a mumsnet group on there. I use Goodreads all the time it is great. So far I have read 24 books and I keep on changing my target number. At the moment it is up to 40.

grannyperv · 24/07/2012 20:44

Have just joined the mumsnet group on goodreads so look forward to getting some more recs.Smile
