to be played by Tom Cruise???! Really?!

Look at the movie trailer on IMDB if you get a chance...he's at least a foot too short & is nothing like you would imagine Reacher to be. :( It could have been so good.

(Was going to post in movies...but you'd need to have read the books to know what I'm on about)

Oh gosh I couldn't go as far as to boycott the next book.

I doubt I'll watch the film though, it will just ruin my mental visual image of how it all should be. You know how you imagine things in books and then when you see the film version it just spoils all the books for you?

I got put off the books too because I got obsessed by his personal hygiene.
He doesn't change his clothes enough.

I'm really disappointed that Tom Cruise had chosen to play this role himself rather than getting someone suitable to do it. Reacher is meant to be tall and attractive. TC is neither.
I imagine that it is part of the contract that Lee Child has to support the film, though I expect in his head he is going 'TC for Reacher? wtf'

I think with the Stephanie Plum books you have the characters pictured so well in yiur own head it wont work watching someone be them.

Did Lee Child have any say or control over the casting/production of the film though? Surely once he had agreed to sell the rights to film producers, he lost all control of it on the big screen, no?
I don't blame Lee Child, I'm sure he is as disappointed about it as we are (although more privately)
Looking at those links above, it is just ridiculous to think that Tom Cruise can play Reacher. Jack Reacher's left hand is the size of TC's head I think.

Just watched the trailer. Looks good. Really good, just not the TC bits. And that stupid pansy voice. That is not Reacher's voice.

What a wasted opportunity to have made a really really good film.

Jack Reacher's showering regime always make me feel slightly guilty for not showering more! My impression is that he likes cleanliness.
Reading the books makes me want to drink coffee too.
P.S. I have baths more than showers.

Damn! I just watched the trailer and it will be shite. Tom Cruise is soooooo wrong.

It was that fight scene at the end where the other guys all tower over him ... okay someone like Bruce Lee could easily have kicked all their arses but you just know Tom Cruise couldn't.

I think I said on the other thread, I would have no problem with them taking liberties with Reacher's description - so for example, if they'd made him a black guy: fine. It never actually says he's white anyway! (Although one must assume that his mother was). You could even make him a shorter, wirier power-house kind of guy if you wanted to, and still have been convincing that he could kick six guys' arses in a fight. But Tom Cruise's image is too clean cut, it lacks the moral ambiguity of Reacher (I'm not saying Cruise himself is a saint - far from it). Reacher is an unstoppable moral force, not a good guy or a hero. Cruise is too protective of his image to want to play that.

Put it simply, would Frances Neagley be in love with Tom Cruise? No she would not.

TC as JR is just wrong I will definitely boycott the film!

Btw, I think a similar decision led to Michael Douglas taking the tough-man-with-mysterious-past role in The Ghost and The Darkness (he was the producer) with similarly disastrous results - I will see if I can find the bit in William Goldman's book where he talks about how it wrecked the balance of the film.

I watched the trailer for the Reacher film - TC is too small and squeaky voiced and just totally lacks the physical presence and coolness that Reacher has - he's supposed to be 6ft 5. Also can't imagine TC being able to beat up 10 bad guys with one hand behind his back and only managing to snag a finger nail....

The whole idea is wrong, wrong , wrong. I hope the film bombs.

I agree. And the voice is definitely wrong. Too high pitched and squeaky to possibly be Reacher.
