I love all Karen Maitlands stuff, like historical but more historical thrillers as opposed to Phillipa Gregoryesque romance stuff! Also love Clare Clark.

Does anyone have any recommendations??

I've just recently discovered KM and really enjoyed Company of Liars; saving The Owl Killers to read on holiday next month. Thanks for mentioning Clare Clark .. will try her too :)

Have you read the Shardlake series by CJ Sansom? I'd go there next. A Tudor lawyer who works for the monarchy/ Cromwell to solve crimes. Very interesting portrayal of Elizabethan London.

Arianna Franklin (sadly died recently) wrote a short series of 'forensic' style historical thrillers that are a good read too - think 'Mistress of the Art of Death' is the first one.

There's the John Shakespeare series by Rory Clements - set later than the Shardlake books and yes, John has a brother called William and John works for Elizabether's spy masters. I really enjoyed those, there are four of them now.

Do you like Roman stuff? Have you read the Falco books by Lindsey Davis? They are quite silly in many ways but are a good holiday read.

Sharon Penman wrote a couple of thrillers set in the time of Eleanor of Aquitaine, but I don't know if they are still in print and there's always Ellis Peters too given the fact she pretty much started the enitre genre.

If you like 18th Century stuff there are a couple by Andrew Taylor, The American Boy and The Anatomy of Ghosts - though I have reservations about The Anatomy of Ghosts which I didn't think was quite what the cover made it out to be, I was expecting more ghosty but that's neither here nor there really.

Josephine Tey's A Daughter of Time is worth a read if you've never read it.

I loved Company of Liars but The Owl Killers just didn't quite work for me, don't know why.
