I've just finished reading this for my book club, but I can't make the meeting this month, so thought I'd spout my views on here Grin
I really enjoyed this, I liked the writing style and was very moved by Roseanne's story - wasn't too bowled over by the ending though - I guessed what it was going to be, and it was a bit too far fetched. But apart from that i was very absorbed in the story.

I see he's written another book - which is Eneas's story, which looks interesting.

I loved it. Read it a few years ago when it first came out in paperback. Just loved the fantasy/reality thing (like the hazy memories of her dad) and she was such a strong woman against all the odds. But it was never sentimental. If you liked this I can recommend Blind side of the heart by Julia Franck, set in Germany during a similar time and an equally strong woman without any cliches or wallowing.

Thanks for that recommendation 33 - it sounds good, I'm sure I have read something else by Julia Franck and enjoyed it (slipped my mind atm)

I loved all the ideas around memory and reality as well - very well explored.
It's so chilling to think that similar things actually happened to some poor women at that time.

I read it and felt the same about the ending. Didn't realise there was another one though. May have to check that out.

The Magdelane Sisters is another good one set around the similar time period.
