Half term week. We're going with parents so I should get in a lot of reading time so something long and meaty.

I like:
Rose Tremain
Margaret Attwood (but not the scifi stuff)
Robert Harris
William Boyd
Anita Shreeve
Anne Tyler
Kate Atkinson

I haven't read the new Robert Harris so that might do.

Kate Morton, Douglas Kennedy.

Helen Dunmore: The Siege - traumas during the siege of Leningrad, fantastic
William Boyd: Reckless - literary spy story
Jeffrey Eugenides: The Marriage Plot - just finished this, very moving

Thanks both.

Not read either of those authors ACoiledThing. I've read Helen Dunmore before and obv W Boyd but not Jeffrey Euginedes.

New writers - exciting!

You like the same authors as me, so I'm confidently suggesting these :)

The Observations by Jane Harris - mysterious, funny and v readable. One of my favourite books last year.

A Disobedient Girl by Ru Freeman - a Sri Lankan novel following two women's very different lives.

Bel Canto by Ann Patchett - describes a hostage situation and the developing relationships between hostages and hostage-takers - not a thriller, very original writing.

Don't know any of those authors either so thanks :)

I'm quite looking forward to my holiday now :o

Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell

The Children's Book (A.S. Byatt)

A beautiful Thing, Fiona Robyn

The Collector by John Fowles is a fantastic read!

YY to Bel Canto - loved that. State of Wonder by the same author also great but not her other ones so much.

DowagersHump · 28/05/2012 21:25

Wah - Bel Canto not available on the Kindle :(

Having said I'd not heard of some of those authors, I realise I was lying :o

I have read Kate Morton before (The Forgotten Garden) and enjoyed it. Also read Douglas Kennedy (Pursuit of Happiness). Rubbish memory! I've read Restless too and I don't fancy the new William Boyd (I've read all his other books).

So The House at Riverton (tried and tested author) and The Observations (fairly sure that's a new to me author) it will be (am going to have to start one tonight because I can't be doing with not having a book on the go).

I shall report back :)
