The Summer book list has been announcedhere. I'm going to be reading The Night Circus, and there are at least a couple of other interesting looking reads. Not a bad selection, at first glance :)

I thought their book club had got a bit schmaltzy the past few selections but I like the look of a few of these. Had Night Circus on my to read list for a while now so this will give me a further nudge towards it.

Tideline looks really interesting, put that and Book of Summers on my wish list. Can't wait for the tv book club choice now, that's usually not far behind.

whensteaready · 25/05/2012 16:33

Tide line is brilliant. Read it in one afternoon.
Also Perfectly Good Man is very very gppd.
The Hypnotist was not as good as I was hoping, ok but not great, got a bit boring in the end.

whensteaready · 25/05/2012 16:34

Good not gppd!
Sorry

JiltedJohnsJulie · 26/05/2012 08:46

Thank you Nora will have a look and see what I can add to my holiday shopping list Smile

Sittinginthesun · 26/05/2012 14:49

WH smiths have an offer on, so have bought a random selection for my holiday next week. I agree, it's not a bad list this year.

VivaLeBeaver · 27/05/2012 21:29

I didn't like The Night Circus at all, couldn't finish it.

I've read a different Patrick Gale book before and loved it so will try this one.

Gottalovecosta · 28/05/2012 11:51

I've never 'done' the book club before, but have decided that as I'm off to uni in sept and won't have a spare minute, I'm going to enjoy the summer and read through the list of books. Just got the thread, not the type of book I'd normally read but am enjoying it so far. :-)

Enragia · 28/05/2012 11:53

dont read the thread

its shit

why are they so OLD?

Enragia · 28/05/2012 11:53

i hate circuses

NoraHelmer · 28/05/2012 12:46

It's this Patrick Gale novel that's coming up as the June MN bookclub read, Viva. Looks good (had a sneak peek at it in ASDA this morning :o). I've read another of his novels - Notes from an Exhibition and really enjoyed it.

I hate gales books

NoraHelmer · 29/05/2012 07:49

Why are you reading a thread about books you hate Enragia? Why don't you start your own thread?

OP posts:
Enragia · 29/05/2012 16:58

Er.. Two books and opinion?

TheLightPassenger · 29/05/2012 17:23

not that old, the Night Circus has only just been released in paperback, I think.

I'm not particularly thrilled by the crime choices. Wasn't Notes from An Exhibition an earlier R & J book? I loved it, but it seems a bit unfair to have the same author more than once.

Enragia · 29/05/2012 19:37

Yes. Think
That's where I got it from

Was so disappointed with thread. Was poor story

TheLightPassenger · 29/05/2012 19:42

ah you mean "The Thread" by Victoria Hislop rather than this thread

NoraHelmer · 29/05/2012 20:36

Ah - makes more sense now. Was feeling quite upset you'd called my thread shit :o I've never read a Victoria Hislop novel, so can't comment on that. I thought Notes from an Exhibition was rather good, but does cover quite a difficult subject of mental health so may not be to everyone's taste.

The Night Circus, I think, is more about magic, and hopefully will be better than Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, which I found unreadable.

Lol! Thought you were a bit autocratic !! :)

happyAvocado · 30/05/2012 13:33

I had a stab at The Island by Victoria Hislop
had to stop after 5 pages
pretentious language - or perhaps I was missing something ... ;)

ACoiledThing · 02/06/2012 20:55

Avocado - I really enjoyed The Island, it was a great holiday read - certainly not a classic but a good story well told. Didn't like her second one nearly as much but have just bought this summers so am hopeful.

happyAvocado · 02/06/2012 22:42

up until abouy 7-8 years ago any book I started I would finish - nowadays I don't have the patience :)

I ma about to finish Into The Darkest Corner - Elizabeth Haynes, I picked it up as recommended byt The book club, wouldn't call it a holiday read but a page turner for sure :)

CoteDAzur · 03/06/2012 19:27

Oh dear. Victoria Hislop? Really?

The Island was so badly written, so incredibly awful that there is no doubt in my mind that she is published only because she is Ian Hislop's wife.

happyAvocado · 03/06/2012 20:49

CoteDAzur - I thought I was alone thinking that''' ;)

CoteDAzur · 03/06/2012 21:33

I can assure you, you are not. Our book club was unanimous on the subject of just how awful The Island was, except one friend who said she liked it (and I quote) "because it was an easy read and I didn't have to think about it".

Actually, Amazon's readers' comments on The Island are pretty scathing, too. Some are titled, simply, "Awful" Grin

happyAvocado · 03/06/2012 22:04

what did your Book club like - i/e other titles/authors?
Perhaps I would have liked them too
