Umming and ahhing over Pig Island and Hanging Hill. I'm not averse to a bit of gory violence but I hate Stephen Leather style books, more a Rebus girl.

Can anyone fill me in on the quality of the writing? Like most readers on here, my reading time is precious!

I read one, guessed who had done it correcty by page 78 of a 500 page book and decided that one was enough.

I read Pig Island. I read a lot of zombie novels and things like that so I'm OK with gore and violence but I found the deaths etc in the book more than I could take. It seemed a bit too gratuitous for the sake of it to me.

I've read her Jack Caffrey novels (Birdman, The Treatment, Ritual, Skin, Gone). I really enjoyed them.

FarelyKnuts · 07/05/2012 11:06

I liked the Jack Caffery.. Pig Island was a bit shite IMO.

zgaze · 07/05/2012 11:16

Loved the Jack Caffrey ones but all the rest are rubbish.

BabeRuthless · 07/05/2012 11:34

Our library has a few in so I might go down and have a rummage through. Is Birdman the first Caffrey one?

Yes.

PercyFilth · 07/05/2012 11:58

Very important to read the Caffrey ones in order. She is one of those authors who keeps referring back to previous events, giving away spoilers galore. Angry No need for it at all.

BabeRuthless · 07/05/2012 14:52

Thanks for all the info. I love discovering new authors!

If you don't like gore then avoid Pig Island! On the whole she is more gore than clever plotting (but I do like her).
If you like Rebus have you tried Stuart MacBride? Logan Macrae is a kind of Aberdonian Rebus.
Also Stephen Booth - his detective stories are set in Derbyshire and a really atmospheric.

notactuallyme · 07/05/2012 18:10

I have on hanging hill to read; didn't realise it was gore. Darn.

cocolepew · 07/05/2012 18:15

Stuart McBride can be gory! The one in the abbatoir was rank.

Peter Robinsons Insp. Banks is safe Grin

ObviouslyOblivious · 07/05/2012 18:19

Not much gore with the delectable DCI Simon Serrailler (Susan Hill). I'm not sure whether I love him or Jack Caffrey more.

PercyFilth · 07/05/2012 20:04

Delectable? He comes over as a horrible selfish cold bastard who fancies his sister.

Francagoestohollywood · 07/05/2012 20:14

I read Birdman, The treatment and Ritual.
The best one is The Treatment imo, Ritual is rubbish.

ObviouslyOblivious · 07/05/2012 20:39

He certainly has flaws Percy....

Lexiesgirl · 07/05/2012 21:14

Love love love the Caffrey books. Not only are they good reads, and pretty twisted (I was living right by Brockwell Park when I read The Treatment, it scared me shitless) but I appreciate the fact that she deliberately set out to make Caffrey hot. And succeeded Wink
