..... a hell of a lot of Chick Lit, Sophie Kinsella, Jane Green, Marian Keyes.

However, lately I have read a few Jodi Picoult and am currently reading Room by Emma Donoghue. Can any of you suggest some great books I may enjoy that are slightly heavier going than my normal Chick Lit but not too overwhelming for some late night/holiday reading.

Thanks!

A few suggestions - Grace McCleen, Megan Abbott, Eleanor Brown, Vanessa Diffenbaugh.

Douglas Kennedy is great, he writes women really well.

Diane chamberlain is good too, heavier than chick lit with some interesting themes

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Room by Emma Donoghue
When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman

All great reads!

Oops just realised you were already on with Room!

How about 'Started Early, Took My Dog' by Kate Atkinson too?

myflabberisgasted · 01/05/2012 15:00

Watching this thread with intrest as I am in the exact same boat!

I loved Room.

A few more I have read is "Me before you" by Jojo Moyes and "Before I go to sleep" by S J Watson.

I second Kate Atkinson. I also like Anita Brookner. But I've read she is somebody you either love or hate.

A Dark-Adapted Eye by Barbara Vine.

I've just read Penny Vincenzi The best of times. I found it unputdownable is that really a word. I had never read any of her books before so pleased I have a new author to work through Smile. It is a bit chicklitty but not really in a girl meets boy way, loads of characters and stories going on.

MarySA · 03/05/2012 20:26

I also totally love Penny Vincenzi. Although some of her books are better than others. My favourite is the middle one of the Spoils of Time trilogy which is called Something Dangerous. Also Wicked Pleasures is a great book.

Kikithecat · 03/05/2012 20:58

Emily Barr is kind of chick lit with a darker side. YY to The Help too.

IAmSherlocked · 03/05/2012 21:00

Anita Shreve is very readable but slightly more thought-provoking than chick lit.

WannabeNigella · 08/05/2012 12:37

Have bought Kate Atkinson Started Early, took my Dog so far and started it last night. Will continue to work my way through this list. Thanks loads!
