Please help me find a book I can't remember the name of

I read a book around 2003. There was a level of fuss about it being really good in the UK at the time. I think it was translated from Greek and had something to do with bees or honey. I think one of the main characters was a teacher or professor and there was something in it about going across Greece (?). The translation was the subject of much discussion at the time as it was quite worthy and wordy.
I'm sorry this isn't much to go on!

It wasn't The Magus was it? Set in Greece and the main character was a teacher. The last paragraph was in Latin.
