Anyone recommend any books set during the plague?

Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brookes, I really enjoyed it.

PiedWagtail · 16/04/2012 16:07

Geraldine Brooks - Year of Wonders - fantastic book! About a village that cuts itself off from everywhere when plague breaks out there, to keep people safe. Absolutely un-putdownable.

Forever Amber has a lot of plague. (17th century one)

I second Year of wonders.

Company of Liars by Karen Maitland (14th century plague)

World Without end by Ken Follett. (14th century plague. Nice to have read Pillars of the Earth first, but not necessary).

Sarum by edawrd rutherford has section on the plague, it goes through many periods of history telling the story of Salisbury / stonehenge.

Doomsday Book by Connie Willis (time travel book featuring the plague)

Katherine by Anya Seton has a few plague-y bits

RightUpMyRue · 16/04/2012 16:21

I've read Year of Wonders(I also really enjoyed this) and am currently reading Comapny of Liars Smile

I like Company of Liars but there's not much plague in it, IYKWIM? I want more gore really TBH.

Will look up the others now...

La Peste by Albert Camus - the English translation.

freelancescientist · 16/04/2012 20:45

The Black Death by John Hatcher - non fiction and set during the plague of 1345. I really enjoyed it, I love gore and medical gore so much the better. Lots of stories about dying serfs and villeins etc etc.

Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year

Diana Norman's The Vizard Mask is a really good read - brief plot: Penitence Hurd's beliefs are shaken when she arrives, a Puritan from America, in Charles II's London with nothing but her prejudices, a Bible and the address of her Aunt Margaret. Her subsequent experiences in the Plague-wrecked city will change her forever.

The Connie Willis book is really good - very sad

"A Parcel of Patterns" by Jill Paton Walsh is the best novel set in the plague years that I've read. I would positively discourage anyone reading "Year of Wonders".

I saw this in Waterstones today:
www.amazon.co.uk/Plague-Child-Tom-Neave-Trilogy/dp/0007312377/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1334745958&sr=1-1

1st in a trilogy - looked like it might be good.

I just loved Katherine by Anya Seton. It's my favourite historical of all time.
