Pure-the ending??

Just finished Pure and had to read the last three pages several times. Still have no idea what it was all about and why it ended like that? Am I being stupid or are other readers just as confused???

I don't think he quite knew what to do with the ending and I found it quite unsatisfactory in a book I'd loved up until then.

I was expecting all the people running about to be a flash forward to the Revolution, then it turned out to be the elephant so I think what he was trying to say was that something as big as an elephant can be cut down to size and the same had been achieved with the success of the graveyard clearance, but I'm quite happy to be told that's not what it means. Was certainly a bit by the ending.

I thought it was going to be the revolution too!! Have book club in Monday so will see what they think of the ending. I thought maybe it was a comment on the decadence of Versailles and the death and destruction of Paris which led up to the revolution??
Anyway it was a weak and confusing ending to an otherwise good book.
