i haven't read that one-still wading through his last one.

Looking forward to the sequel to 'The Shining' out soon and the one after that about a serial killer in a fairground.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/04/2012 20:37

Yep!

I thought two of the stories were brilliant and two less so. I think the rape one and the serial killer husband one were the 2 I liked best. Can't actually remember the other 2 offhand.

Not his finest book by any means but not bad at all.

LtEveDallas · 12/04/2012 20:38

Is that the one with the 4 stories? If its the one I am thinking of I thought the rape storyline was horrible. I mean bloody well written but it made my skin crawl.

LtEveDallas · 12/04/2012 20:43

Oh yes it was then Smile

Wasn't keen on the farmer story, or the rape story, liked (in a very dark way) the cancer/best friend story. Loved the serial killer husband story.

CheerfulYank · 12/04/2012 20:45

Yes, that one!

Remus the rape and killer husband one were also the ones I liked the best. The first story in the collection was called "1922", about the man who convinces his son to help him murder his wife? I thought that one was very well-written but so desperately sad.

The last one, the killer husband, was probably my favorite because I've thought a lot about Paula Rader myself (the BTK case was the one SK said he based the story on) and it made me really think. And I really liked the old man detective who came to visit her at the end. Would like to see more of him!

Brooklyn I am fearsomely excited for the new Shining sequel as well...I loved Danny and Dick Halloran and would like to know what they've been up to. :)

Why don't I know anything about a Shining sequel? I've not seen anything on his website about it - please tell me more!

Atreegrowsinbrooklyn · 12/04/2012 20:50

There was an interview with King in one of the weekend broadsheet magazines- The Guardian?

anyway, here is the man himself reading from Dr Sleep!

LtEveDallas · 12/04/2012 20:57

I wanted to give her a big cheer when he went down the stairs, and I liked the detective at the end too "You did the right thing" Smile

I thought the farmer was just sad, couldnt find anything redeeming about it. Unlike the rape / killer storylines where you could cheer on a character I just couldn't find anything about the farmer that I liked. I thought the 'extension' story was good until the children were hurt - at which point I started feeling a bit 'dirty' about it all.

CheerfulYank · 12/04/2012 20:59

I know, I got a little misty when the Detective told her that and kissed her cheek. What a brave woman, and what a terrible thing to have to face.

The farmer story was awful. I felt the same about the extension story...happy for him at first, then uneasy, then quietly horrified.
