...could we start one?

I know there are loads of GH fans on here, so what do you think?

A bit like this one on Goodreads?

We have our Unofficial MN Group there too, if you'd like to join in for a chat about any book :).

MN introduced me to GH and I do like her a lot, though I can only take her in quite small doses - ie no more than 2 every few months. I'm currently reading, 'The Nonesuch' and enjoying it hugely. She's like a cross between Jane Austen and Enid Blyton!

HandMadeTail · 12/04/2012 20:46

I love Georgette Heyer. My favourite is "The Grand Sophy".

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 12/04/2012 21:13

I have never read any, but I love historical trash novels. What would you recommend?

MaryZ, amazon has them all - they've just been republished or you can get them on Kindle if you have one.

Dedalus, my personal favourite is Frederica, closely followed by Venetia but if you want more of a historical element then Regency Buck has more 'RL' characters from the Regency Period. She's also written 'proper' historical fiction like My Lord John which is to do with Henry IV's children and The Conqueror which is William the Conqueror's story (I haven't got as far as those yet though, I've mainly read the Regency romances).

Not volunteering to join the group, but wishing it and you every success!

HumphreyCobbler · 12/04/2012 21:39

I am in love with Lord Worth.

LadyDamerel · 12/04/2012 21:40

Cheers, Maudie! Are you sure you won;t join us? I am persuaded you would develop a tendre for the Marquis of Alverstoke...

I love GH. I've just replaced all my 2nd hand 20+yr old paperbacks with kindle ones Grin

RoxyRobin · 12/04/2012 21:43

I love her books - and so did my formidable spinster great-aunts (both teachers in the 1930s), my GP aunt and my aunt who was a medical mission sister and nursed King Hussein of Jordan. She said he had the hairiest chest she'd ever seen on a man (I was a bit taken aback by this comment from a nun!). But I digress.

They are my comfort-read when things take a turn for the bad, and mine, too, are dropping to bits.

They just don't make men like that any more.

I'm in love with most of them, Humphrey. Worth, Alverstoke, Sylvester, Damerel, Sir Waldo, John Staple, Robert Beaumaris, Oliver Carleton, Miles Calverleigh - any will do.

Ah, I am rediscovering the joys of GH since getting my kindle, having grown up with reading my mum's copies. The Grand Sophy is my favourite, but I also have a soft spot for the Talisman Ring because it makes me laugh, and Venetia. I like the ones with 'managing females' the best!

Roxy, they are comfort reads for me too. Proper escapism in a way no other books can match.

So what about a proper book club then? Pick one book, (re)read and meet back up to discuss a sennight or fortnight later? Could we manage that?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/04/2012 22:33

Liked Sir Waldo a lot but the end of The Nonesuch seemed v abrupt.

PassTheTwiglets · 12/04/2012 22:38

I am 3 pages into Frederica but am far from being able to read a book in a fortnight, sadly. But if it's a book I've already read then I'm up for it :)

LadyDamerel · 12/04/2012 22:42

How long would it take you Twigs? I'm a ridiculously fast reader so I may be under-estimating how long it would take people.

PassTheTwiglets · 12/04/2012 22:44

I read quickly enough when I get round to it but there's always something else to do instead, for me. I prefer TV once the kids are in bed, though DH and I have been saying that we ought to switch the TV off and read. Sop I tend to read 2 oages here, 3 pages there amd the upshot is that it takes me at least 2 months to get through a book at the moment. So honestly don't wait for me :)

Auntiestablishment · 12/04/2012 22:49

Just beginning Reluctant Widow after Regency Buck and Devil's Cub in the last week.

LadyDamerel · 12/04/2012 22:53

I MN through the evening then read when I go to bed and end up engrossed till daft o'clock. I really ought to go to bed earlier!

Auntie, are they first reads or re-reads for you? That's about the speed I read at - 2 or 3 books a week unless they're really fat books (Wolf Hall took about 10 days, that was an epic read).

Maryz - have a look here for as much GH as you can shake a snuff box at.

Took DD2 (age 14, massive GH fan as well) to the Royal Pavillion in Brighton last weekend which was Very Exciting. We had a nuncheon on the terrace, and then came home and squealed over Regency Buck and A Civil Contract Grin.

DD1 is at university in Bath which is also Very Exciting, and I had a nuncheon in the Assembly Rooms with her earlier in the year. Her BF is getting used to weird squeaks whenever they walk past or down a street mentioned in one of the books. There may have been a few text conversations along the lines of " laura place, who lives there?" " im walking down it now, does it say what number?" "are you sure, go and get the book and check" Wink.

VenetiaLanyon · 12/04/2012 23:01

ladydamerel, are you me? Wink
