Spa break ON MY OWN at the weekend, need a fabulous book - suggestions?

Off to a lovely spa for the weekend, gorgeous country house hotel with lots of cosy corners for reading by the fire and lovely pools to lounge beside.

Best thing is, I'll be all by myself

Unfortunately I am having a complete mental block as to what reading material to take, I have a kindle so could download a couple of things. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't particularly like lighthearted chic-lit type books, and anything where horrible things happen to children is a no-no (just can't take it after having DC) other than that any suggestions welcome!

Try Rivers of London and the follow up book. They describe it as an adult Harry Potter only because the policeman goes to work for the 'magical' department.

Okay still sounds shit but it isn't - download a sample copy on the kindle for free and see if you like it.

I was going to recommend The Hunger Games trilogy but I'm not sure whether that would fall into the horrible things happening to children category, although they are all teenagers and they are very good stories.

Failing that, When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman. Absolutely loved that novel - unputdownable, as was My Dear I Wanted To Tell You by Louisa Young.

And The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. Pressed send too soon :).

Assuming this isn't a fetish thread what about The Secret History by Donna Tart.

No, not a fetish thread but that thread is v. amusing....can sympathise with much of it Let's just say I have been dreaming about this break for a LONG time.....leaving 2 year old DS with DH and currently 20 weeks pregnant with DC2 so hoping that I won't be too rotund to enjoy the spa/massage bit
