Hello! Can anyone recommend a good history of Britain? I need something that is readable and gives a good sweep through time. I am a history graduate but twenty years and four children later, find myself stumbling over the basic chronology of kings and queens if they are outside the particular periods I studied. It is all very embarrassing, especially when my husband appears to know more than me! Thank you!

Great Tales from English History by Robert Lacey is quite readable.
It picks out specific stories and events rather than covering absolutely everything, but it will remind you of much of what you've forgotten and give you some new info too.

My favourite history books at present are: brief history series and time travellers guide.

Thank you! I have had a quick look on Amazon and they are exactly the kind of thing I am looking for. I just need a birthday now and lots of vouchers! Funnily enough I downloaded a sample of the time traveller book onto my Kindle a day or two ago. I have really enjoyed it. I love social history and the time traveller idea is an interesting way of writing about the past. Any more recommendations gratefully received.
