Would you read a book with a magical theme, or has it been done to death?

Just that really - was Harry Potter the magical story to end all magical stories?

For adults or children?

SaltResistantSlug · 27/02/2012 18:27

What about Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke? I bought it ages ago, and really struggled to get into it, so put it back on my bookshelf to have another go when I'm feeling braver :). But it is supposed to be good.

No - I hate stuff like that. I like a nice thriller. I am particularly fond of Michael Crighton because of all the diagrams/research etc. Fiction based on fact. Though I can cope with a little bit of woo. I am a bit anal though.

I read the first HP book and thought it was shit. People tell me they get better.....

HamblesHandbag · 27/02/2012 18:43

As a child, yes. As an adult, no.

I don't think genre is a problem. If it's good writing, it'll be good. Go for it!

wickerman · 27/02/2012 18:54

And of course it's horses for courses. Magic isn't for everyone, but then nor are thrillers or romantic fiction or po-faced literary novels about marital breakdown. A good story is a good story and will find its market.

Itsjustafleshwound · 27/02/2012 18:57

I like my fiction to be believable, so no

Iwantcandy · 27/02/2012 19:02

Jonathan strange and dr norrel is wonderful

PrideOfChanur · 28/02/2012 08:54

Yes,I like fantasy - but it would have to have something to make it stand out from all the other fantasy out there, there are some really good writers in the genre.
I don't think Harry Potter was the magical story to end all magical stories though,it was very successful and popular, but no way is it the peak of fantasy/magical literature!
