do I replace lost kindle?

I got me and dh kindle when they 1st came out. I lusted after one for so long, but tbh way pretty disappointed with it, I found books harder to read, not as fun, but mainly, it massively annoys me that the books are the same price on kindle, or if buying 2nd hand, significantly more expensive, when there's no/highly reduced production, distribution costs etc. that just really bugs me.

Anyway, then dh looses his kindle, so he has adopted mine.

I have found myself missing it, and next week I am away on holiday without him, and I know he's going to want my kindle. So, is it too extravagant to but a new one?

And if I do, which one, as I see, times have moved on. and there's 3 different ones Confused or even 4 Confused Confused

Oooo will be interested to see what replies you get, I have never understood the appeal of using a kindle bar the convenience factor of taking loads of books if you go away, but can't imagine enjoying the actual use of it.

So that makes me curious, why you now miss it when you said it was harder and less fun to read books on it? Can you put your finger on why?

:)

really should make better use of commas instead of just thought streaming!

Snowbeetle · 14/02/2012 11:16

me that is not you! Grin

If its just for the convenience of your holiday, why not claim yours back from DH and carry on buying secondhand books the rest of the time?

ErnesttheBavarian · 14/02/2012 16:01

well, there is the convenience of having loads of books with you, and being able to get hold of books quickly. I am keen on the idea of listening to audio books, I recently had a long drive and would have liked to have listened to a book, except dh had my kindle Hmm

But unless I can long term reclaim it (say for a month) I won't be sure it's not a 2nd wave of kindle whim.

I'm in Germany and seems like there's a 3rd type, as opposed to 2 types in UK?

I guess 150 or even 90 quid ish seems a bit extravagant. But then, I have one, but it's been knicked.

I have the new one, without the keyboard, but with Wi-fi. It doesn't have the audiobook facility, but I love it. You don't need the keyboard. It's smaller than the keyboard one so fits in your bag better. I love books, so wasn't really fussed about getting a Kindle, but it's almost an extension of my arm now.

I've only downloaded one pay for book. All the others are classics or free.

Mine cost £89, plus DH paid £10 or £15 for a leather cover.

Am now torn as think smaller looks good, but would like audio book feature. Also we every few weeks travel to where no wi fi, so the 3 g makes sense. Mind you my old one has got 3 g and audio. Dunno if we need 2 that have ? Ok think I will replace but can't decide with what.

If you have a smartphone you could just download the kindle app - pages are smaller but if you only want it for holidays etc it might do you? I use audible app on my phone too, to listen to books.

GooseyLoosey · 15/02/2012 11:21

I lost mine just before Christmas and have decided not to replace it.

Love audio books and have downloaded Amazon's Audible app on my phone. If you are a member you can get some quite good deals and they are great to listen too.

Also have the kindle app on the phone. Not quite as good as the kindle as the screen is smaller but it is fine for when I am on the move.

The only thing I think I will miss the Kindle for is the length of its battery life when I am on holiday and I have to wonder if that is enough to justify the expense of a new one. On balance, I have decided not.

I find using my iphone as a kindle really saps the battery power though. Whereas the kindle goes ages without needing to be charged.

ordered the basic one this morning. we already have a 3g one, so I decided with a bit of organisation we don't need to get 2 top ones. I would possibly use it most evenings, and dh uses his (mine) every evening, so don't want to just read on my iPhone every night. Thanks for input. Hope it comes in times for dh to take away.
