Help! Which childrens book is this? Do you recognise the story?

Little boy has a monster that only he can see/comes out when he's alone. The monster is very naughty and makes a mess etc. The little boy blames the monster, but of course his mum thinks it's him.

Aaargh! Dd and I just can't remember the title/author. She borrowed it not long ago and really liked it. I said she could buy it with some of her pocket money, but now we're stumped. Help please!

Although similar, these don't sound like the one - seems it's not exactly an original storyline though judging by the different titles.

this is freaky, dd brought the one wordgirl linked to home from school today. DH walked in the room not 1 minute ago and picked it up and asked about it

It might be the Oscar one - there are so many books zooming around here between the three of them I get confused trying to remember one from a few weeks back. Dd only mentioned it again tonight on going to bed. She also reminded me about my vague suggestion at the time about buying it.
