I am reading Dragonrider in English with my 8 year old at the moment

SauerKraut · 20/01/2006 17:16

Will also be reading it in German as living in CH- kids at school in German

SauerKraut · 20/01/2006 17:17

Why?

SauerKraut · 20/01/2006 17:38

Sorry, that sounded rude! I meant, are you reading it - for yourself or with kids, and in which language?

Hi!
I read Dragonrider to check whether it was suitable for ds1, ds1 is now reading it and loving it (in English).
My interest in the german original is for a number of reasons.

  • I didn't particularly like it, and thought the language was slightly stilted. So I am interested how the original compares.
  • I work in a secondary school, and wonder whether it might be something to encourage the children to read.
  • I have a degree in German - albeit a rather rusty one - and I was wondering about reading it myself in German to brush up my language skills.

But it's quite pricey to get something sent from Amazon Germany, and I only want to get it if someone thinks it's worth getting iyswim!

Ah! Well snap on one point- my ds1 is loving it too, although I am reading it to her. Don't know about the German yet but I am certainly going to get it for myself, to encourage my own German along. Didn't know a word before coming here!!Mightn't the story be a bit too young for secondary school kids, though?

roisin · 20/01/2006 20:22

Yes, I would say the story is OK for, say 6-12s; and our 11/12s certainly wouldn't be up to reading it in German. But what's her other stuff like? Is there anything else older?

We've got Inkheart on the shelves, but I've not read it, and don't actually know what it's about.

I don't know as Dragonrider is the only one I've read so far. The bookshops here are full of her, though, and I can have a look for you next time I'm in town. Wouldn't mind sending a couple, if you're interested.
