Dear readers I'm longing for a book recommendation that is going to raise my spirits this January. I got Afterwards the other day because Amazon recommended it but it is so overwhelmingly sad I can't stand to read another page. I'm going abroad for work in a couple of weeks and need something funny or really engaging to read during those long, lonely evenings in a crappy hotel room.
Some of my fave books have been
The Help
Life of pi
One Day
Shantaram
Any Human Heart
Shadow of the Wind
The Millennium Trilogy
OK so now I list them they're not so funny but I thought they were all really good and January is miserable enough surely.

Hi - I've read a number of those too and enjoyed them.
Other suggestions -
The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennet - v funny, but short so you would need something else as well
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini (the author of The Kite Runner)
Wolf Hall - Hilary Mantell
Small Island - Andrea Levy (or any of her other books)
The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver
The Time Travellers Wife - Audrey Niffenegger (not seen the film but I'd guess this is much much better)
The Other Hand - Chris Cleve

Hope that helps - would love to hear what you think

I recommend Carl Hiiasen - can't really describe what he writes but closest I can come is crime/mystery with a humourous & satirical edge. My favourite ones are Skinny Dip, Lucky You and Nature Girl.

Wow thank you all. I'm going to do a mega order on Amazon. Worried I also read and loved the Poisonwood Bible and The Time Travellers Wife. I'll let you know how I get on with the others
