Is it any good? I think it's a ghost story

It's not that scary. It's slightly chilling.

MrsBovary · 02/01/2012 22:14

It is indeed. Though I read after watching the play, and preferred to the book.

fuzzpig · 02/01/2012 22:14

No idea about the book but the play in London gave me the heebiejeebies shivers, it was very atmospheric and I kept jumping out of my seat!

MrsBovary · 02/01/2012 22:17

I saw it in London too, in that tiny theatre. Can't recall the name.

miSaltireandwine · 02/01/2012 22:18

I didn't realise there was a play too. My mum jsut rang and said she was going to post it on Wednesday when PO opens again as she didn't like it and thought I would.

I read it last year. I thought it was pretty chilling, the ending, anyway.
And it's very short.

catsareevil · 02/01/2012 22:20

I didnt like it, found it irritating. Not especially scary.

miSaltireandwine · 05/01/2012 14:17

Well it's arrived today.
I'm halfway through reading "The Lantern" now though which has a supernatural feel to it too, so Woman in Black will have to wait

I think it is really scary. I used to teach it and it freaked the students out too.
I hope you enjoy it.

I enjoyed it. Really like Susan Hill. Chilling is the word, atmospheric. Also liked The Small Hand. Plus the Woman in Black play is fab in the west end (or was .... Is it still on?)

I recently picked this up at a book stall at a Christmas fayre and found it a good read. I particularly liked the style, she captured the sense of the period well in the dialogues and descriptions. Agree, the end was a chilling surprise. Might seek out more Susan Hill.

It is an excellent book; I love Susan Hill and I think it is her best work. I haven't seen the play or TV adaptation but I do have a Radio 4 Afternoon Play production of it on tape, it is so scary that I cannot listen to it alone. I am really looking forward to the film next month and will be going with my Mum. The stills I have seen so far of the cemetary look very similar to my mind's eye although the actual Woman is nothing like as awful as my imagination of her.

OhdearNigel · 11/01/2012 09:57

Tadah - I'm about 1/3rd through The Small Hand - really enjoying it

norriscoleforpm · 11/01/2012 09:59

Yes! It's really very scary. I've started reading her other spooky stories too. The Small Hand is excellent as well.

norriscoleforpm · 11/01/2012 10:01

I love SH - her detective series is fabulous too.

Just watched the trailer (on silent as I am at work) and even watching it minimised it made all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It looks proper scary, can't wait for the film.
Have just ordered it for my Mum on Amazon as it was her that introduced me to Susan Hill and we will be seeing the film together. Also ordered it for myself on Kindle :D

SaltireOShanter · 11/01/2012 14:47

I've jsut watched the trailer too,and wodnered why the girl narrating the poem during it had an American accent, is it an American film?
