A teenage woman in ancient Greece or Rome runs away from arranged marriage, ends up in Alexandria (?) where she pretends to be a eunuch and enrols as a medical student. Ends up as a doctor in the Roman army, serving in central Europe somewhere. Gets taken hostage by the Goths (?), is rescued, falls in love etc etc.
