What's the rift between Esther and Richard about?

I get that at first she resented Kate, and was fearful for her own future, but she makes up her mind to accept Kate. So why the rift, what triggered it in the end?

Anyone read it?

I read it years ago.

Had forgotten this bit. (daughter and her father?) Was it to do with wanting to be independent? Can't remember and probably don't still have a copy.
