Anne McCaffrey RIP

Just heard this morning that Anne McCaffrey died on Monday. Although not to everyone's taste - she gave me hours and hours of escapist joy and a love of all things dragonish (and Crystalline).

I went to a book signing of hers once, and I think it was the only time I have ever been lost for words - all I could do was stutter "thank you".

Let the dragons mourn... the MasterHarper has passed.

How sad

I had no idea

My favourite author

Dragonish, Crystalline and shipsinging

oldsilver · 25/11/2011 23:16

... there was just so many to choose from.

Apparently it was a stroke but only saw it in the news today. Perhaps Helva is singing to her now Smile

I had dinner with her - way back in 88 or 89

rushofbloodtothefeet · 25/11/2011 23:19

Oh that is sad - she was part of my formative years. May have to dig out some old Dragon Singer books

IndigoBell · 25/11/2011 23:19

I too was very sad when I heard this.

A long, long time since I've read her books.

But, yes, at one time she was my absolute favourite author.

I loved Killashandra.

alittlebitcountry · 25/11/2011 23:33

I must have re-read her books hundreds of times as a teenager, even Dinosaur Planet. Time to dig them all out again.

oldsilver · 25/11/2011 23:33

Killashandra got me through a few of those moments when I was younger Smile

I think I may re-read.....

ConstantlyCooking · 26/11/2011 18:12

How sad. I loved the Pern and Crystal Singer books when I was a teenager. The Ship who Sang was one of my favourite love stories.

nooka · 26/11/2011 18:25

She was 85 though, so a pretty good innings (ad nice to die at home surrounded by lots of family I think). I read she wrote over 20 books. I was a bit surprised to see her being described as a Sci-Fi writer, as I'd classify her writing as pure fantasy. I loved the Pern stuff as a teenager, but I recently re-read one or two and thought they were really not terribly good.

KatyMac · 26/11/2011 22:50

She described herself as a sci-fi writer

I thought she wrote many more than 20 books; pern alone has more than that

oldsilver · 27/11/2011 17:12

Definitely more than 20 think I've read most of these Smile

I hadn't heard this either. Dragonsong and Dragonsinger were among my faves growing up. RIP Anne McCaffrey, and thank you.

Sad
FairyArmadillo · 27/11/2011 17:30

Sad I loved the Pern series and The Ship Who Sang.

IronOrchid · 01/12/2011 23:57

Oh wow - Anne McCaffrey's books got me into sci-fi/fantasy as a teen, and through some very dark times. RIP, Anne - thank you and farewell.

mulledfishandfrostedlilacs · 08/12/2011 20:32

oh I just reqad this :(

RIP anne. Wonderful writer, lovely woman.

I only just saw this. I've loved pretty much everything she's written. So sad to hear this. Sad
