If I tell you the plot, can you identify the book??

I need to remember the name of a book I read a while ago.

All I can remember is the lead character was a woman and I think her husband had died and he sent her presents or notes from the grave - I think one of the presents was a puppy?? And I believe the dog saved someone's life maybe at some point??

It sounds like "ps. I love you" but it's not that. I'm starting to think it's nothing more than a figment of my imagination because nobody seems to know what I'm on about and I can't find it on amazon.
