C J Sansom Winter in Madrid-can you recommend similar style books?

My dad enjoys books by C J Sansom.I want to get him a couple of books for his birthday but he's read all CJ Sansom's. Can anyone recommend any similar style books? I haven't read any of his books so not really sure what I am looking for.

Frank Tallis' Vienna series (they begin really well but then do get samey)
