Fantastic, I wouldn't be without mine now. The fact that you can get books immediately is an added bonus.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/05/2011 14:48

Love, love, love mine.

izzybiz · 11/05/2011 14:50

If you read alot then definately get one,I love mine!

sonearsofar · 11/05/2011 16:45

I bought one on Friday, as we're going for a long holiday and I don't want to risk being without something to read. However, the day after that I bought 3 (proper) books.
The kindle is convenient (although a surprising number of books aren't available in the format) and it is amazing to buy a book and, hey presto, you've got it. It's also much lighter than a large book.
But...it is much more enjoyable to read a proper book. What feels really odd is not to be moving your eyes to read a left hand, then a right hand page. It doesn't sound like much, but, to me, feels very odd.
A well printed book is so much more than words - it's the typeset (only a choice of 3 on the kindle), the paper, the spacing, the cover and just the feel of the book in your hands. Also, the kindle is no good for illustrations. What can be nicer than walking into a bookshop and browsing? If we all read our books on kindles, there won't be any bookshops. You won't find books that you wouldn't normally read, by seeing them on the shelves, and our reading decisions will narrow, and we will be poorer for it.
So, while I like my kindle as a toy, I would still rather carry a book around in my handbag any day.

I agree with sonearsofar. I love having books on a bookshelf in the house too. I'm not sure I could be converted to a Kindle. Agree that they seem convenient though.

I couldn't be without mine now. It's great for the daily newspaper: it's cheaper, you can get it anywhere even abroad (like Hurgada during the Arab Spring) and if you share the account with DH you get two for the price of one. And you don't have to remember to cancel if you have it delivered to your home. or go out in the rain if you don't. Or throw masses of paper away at the end of the week.
What's not to like?

muddyangels123 · 11/05/2011 18:24

I love mine.
I can't believe the different books i've read since i've had it.
I've found no problems with it, but my hands are small so i find the size great.

JustineMumssnet · 11/05/2011 18:28

oh lordy now im humming and hawing too

weimy · 11/05/2011 18:34

I'm thinking about getting one too now!

AnnDaloozier · 11/05/2011 18:34

but i read in teh bath and oyu know

AnonymousBird · 11/05/2011 18:38

DH is desperate for one of these - I haven't seen them in RL - only pictures etc. He says he can download the newspaper in the morning (but he doesn't neeed a contract???? - is that right? I'd be grateful for some insight on how that works)

He's not a big reader, but I read loads on holiday so if he uses it for the train in the morning then I could use it when we go away.

The more I hear the more I like the sound of it!

Slubberdegullion · 11/05/2011 18:44

love mine a lot.

Downloaded a book yesterday at swimming lessons (dc not me), and there it was, just like that and free too.

have watertight cover for the bath/beach Ann

AnnDaloozier · 11/05/2011 18:45

ooh coolio

silverfrog · 11/05/2011 18:46

No contract needed with a kindle, anonymousbird - it is all built in ot the Amazon price.

there are 2 types" wifi (need a wifi connection, either at home or a hotspot) to connect.

or 3g, which connects anywhere via Amazon whispernet.

I ahve the wifi version, as it is all I need. dh has the 3g versin, as he has newspaper/magazine subs, and travels a lot, so is not always in reach of wifi.

nespaper is delivered over the waves each morning to his kinde.

as someone said earlier, if you set up a joint amazon account, and register more than one kndle to it (if both you and your partner want one) then you get 2 for the price of one, as you can deliver purchases to more than one kindle.

they are fab. truly marvellous.

silverfrog · 11/05/2011 18:48

ooh watertight cover, slubber? do tell.

I read mine in the bath anyway, with normal leather cover - all fine.

but watertight would be handy for beach/camping etc.

travispickles · 11/05/2011 18:49

Bloody brilliant. Love it especially the cover with the light (reading under covers as have baby :) )

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/05/2011 18:50

From the opposite point of view from sonear I actually find reading the kindle easier than reading a book and am reading much more and like others have said, am reading a greater diversity of books.

Agree that it is lovely having books on the shelf and always will have books in our home but the kindle has got me reading more than ever.

Slubberdegullion · 11/05/2011 18:55

waterproof cover

I particularly like the neck strap so you can also wear it like a giant beach necklace with your sarong.

AnonymousBird · 11/05/2011 18:58

Oo, I think I need to properly research. Don't even know how much they cost, but I will in about 30 seconds time

AnnDaloozier · 11/05/2011 18:58

is the third gen the most recent?

is the stand any use?

silverfrog · 11/05/2011 18:58

tres trendy, indeed.

ta.

sonearsofar · 11/05/2011 21:03

Obviously it all comes down to what you like, but I've just tried to put 'Snow' by Pamuk and 'Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow' (another thread reminded me how much I loved it) on mine, and they're not available, which, to me seems like quite a gap.
