Had decided to go for " The hand that first held mine " but now i am wondering if it is too similar to the last two that we have read. This months read is The Hothouse flower (a definate disappointment),last month was the Swimmer by Roma Tearne and the month before was The Help(a big hit.)

Books which have been a hit in the past include Secret River,One Day,The Outcast ,Wolf Hall ,The Piano Teacher

Really want to read the Maggie O'Reilly but I am wondering if the Water with Elephants might be fun as we could combine with a summer cinema trip.Have read mixed reveiws of the Sara Gruen ,but all positive re the O'Reilly.

any views?

I don't know any of those books, but I share your concerns when it comes to my turn for choosing the book! There are 10 in my BC, its rare that everyone likes the book, but 2 that I remember that most enjoyed were The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Yes we read the Potato Peel book ,we haven't done the Uncommon Reader .Its that difficult thing do you try to choose something everyone will enjoy,or something you want to read or something to challenge everyone. Our bookclub is quite a sociable laid back one

I liked Water for Elephants, an enjoyable read. And yes, a good excuse for a sinema trip. But I've not read the other one.

I always choose on that I like but everyone else seems to hate! We hardly ever talk about the book anyway, think we'd be done under the Trades description act for calling ourselves a book club. Should be wine club :o

I love Maggie O'farrell - and think it would be a hit with my book club and we sound similar in our likes to your bookclub. But I haven't read Water with Elephants (but the chance of a cinema trip would also go down well with our bc !). The thing abot the Maggie O'F book is that its quite short (but lots to discuss I would think)... which would definitely appeal to our bookclub !

Definately Water for Elephants, its a great book and fascinating reading with the background of American depression, its also a quick and easy read. Very very enjoyable. I also enjoyed Maggie o Farrell but W for Es is a bit different
