Kite Runner, definitely.

goodbyemrschips · 14/04/2011 20:19

1000 splendid suns............read it in three days.

thelennox · 14/04/2011 20:20

Kite runner

NettoSuperstar · 14/04/2011 20:21

Kite Runner, but both made me sob like a baby.

hackingandhewing · 14/04/2011 20:21

What mrschips said - have read it twice and planning to do so again on flight to NY in May.

Never normally say this but it is honsetly the best book I have ever read.

MirandaGoshawk · 14/04/2011 20:22

Kite Runner is more complex, and takes longer to read. 1000 Splendid Suns is valuable, I think, because it gives a real feel of what it must be like to be a woman living under the Taliban's regime.

I loved them both.

ClaireDeLoon · 14/04/2011 20:22

1000 Splendid Suns edges it for me but love both

Tinkerisdead · 14/04/2011 20:25

I preferred 1000 splendid sons. I loved the Kite Runner but i pre-empted the storyline far more than splendid sons. Loved both though.

Lizzylou · 14/04/2011 20:26

Umm, enjoyed both but think Kite runner edged it for me.
I found 1000 splendid suns more formulaic tbh (going against the grain).

cybbo · 14/04/2011 20:26

Kite runner for me- I couldnt get into 1000 splendid suns

oxocube · 14/04/2011 20:31

KR

travellingwilbury · 14/04/2011 20:33

I liked both but Kite Runner for me just edges it . Enjoy .

MrsAnastasiabeaverhousing · 14/04/2011 20:33

Kite runner but tbh both are excellent books!

storminabuttercup · 14/04/2011 20:35

kite runner - i struggled to get into splendid suns

you will cry

NorthernGobshite · 14/04/2011 20:35

Sorry, unable to decide. Love both equally. And this thread has inspired me to reread them....which one first though!?

NarcolepsyQueen · 14/04/2011 20:36

Dont make me choose! They are both amazing books.

ongakgak · 14/04/2011 20:38

KR I found far superior and I also though 1000 SS was not as good, the story was a bit predictable.

CoteDAzur · 14/04/2011 20:54

I didn't read Kite Runner but 1000 Splendid Suns was not a great book.

It is a book written in English by an American who has left Afghanistan as a child, which talks only about mistreatments women endure. Kind of like a book about America written in Arabic by a Saudi, which only talks about hamburgers and fat people. Stereotyping galore. And don't get me started on the factual mistakes in that book Hmm

ongakgak · 14/04/2011 20:59

cote you put it much better than me, but you have hit the nail on the head there. I found it a giant Yawn, and after the KR was very disappointed.

annieapple7 · 14/04/2011 21:31

Is the Kite Runner as full of cruelty like 1000? I couldn't finish 1000 after he locked her and baby in the room.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 14/04/2011 21:35

I loved The Kite Runner and hated 1000 Splendid Suns. I thought the latter was cliched and irritating and cartoonish, whereas the former was more subtle and more quietly shocking.

EasterChickAndRabbitKurri · 14/04/2011 23:06

I loved the Kite Runner, - gave up on 1000 Splendid Suns - couldn't get into it at all.

oohlaalaa · 20/04/2011 18:01

1000 Splendid Suns

welshie1 · 21/04/2011 21:09

I enjoyed both but think KR definately tipped the balance for me. In a way I agree with ColonelBrandons... in terms KR being more subtle and quietly shocking but dont agree with cartoonish and irritating for 1000 Splendid Suns. Just read them both and reach your own opinion ..then try "The Book Thief" by Marcus Zusak.
