Glint by Ann Coburn. Ds1 picked this up and read the first few chapters and was hooked, so we bought a copy. He couldn't put it down.
I've read the first 50 pages or so, and it's surprisingly good writing, and would bear reading aloud well.
I wouldn't recommend it for younger readers though because of the content. Amazon review says: "... And the real world is VERY real; Child abuse, drugs, mental illness and illegal immigration are all covered, without sugar coating ..."
