what lovely pictures to go with the stories, my two boys love her books. I have just looked on amazon and am pleased to see that she has written lots and lots of stories, if you have read any, which ones can you recommend?

He helps out a little girl there-that's what helps him to be brave.

alittlebitscary · 27/10/2005 21:44

i may be wrong, maybe there are 2 similar ones. this one has alfie at bernard's party v v shy, but comes out of shell to help min who is even more scared than him.

ok, maybe you;re talking about a different one

gingerbear · 27/10/2005 21:45

She is called Min, and Bernard is horrid to her - bursts a bubble that landed on her arm & frightens her with a tiger mask.

tiredemma · 27/10/2005 21:47

going to have to get the Alfie ones, its ds2's name so he will love them.

i cant believe just how popular they are!

I love the big Alfie storybook and out of doors book too.
ALso the one about the colours - where yellow is "warm as the sun by our back door" mmmm I love her pictures.
We are always trying to work out how old Annie Rose is - shecan't really talk ("Proper Words") and is still in a high chair, but she is out of nappies except at at night ("An Evening at Alfie's") soooo - 20 mo and potty trained early??

JanH · 27/10/2005 21:49

Oh yes, all that adds up, you were right, albs! (I remember the mask, gb! We used to have this book - and lots of other Shirleys - I can't imagine I got rid but maybe I did unless they are in a box somewhere which is very likely )

AnnieSG · 27/10/2005 21:51

Love, love, love her too.
We have the wonderful compendium, also a small hardback of 'Alfie gets in first'. I adore that story. I love Alfie and Mrs McNally and Mrs McNally's Maureen and all of it!

tiredemma · 27/10/2005 21:52

scaryclary- colours is their favourite. They sit in the bath while i read colours to them and they shout out the colours as i turn the page over.

they also love "bathwaters hot"

this is great- a shirley hughes appreciation thread!

Oh, me too clary- she seems to develop at a strange rate, doesn't she? Everything out of synch. I love the one where she says Bernard for the first time

I can never be ar*ed to say 'Mrs MacNally's Maureen'. I always shorten it to Maureen.

I love the one about Mr MacNally's hat, where Alfie gives it to his mate the milkman to keep his head warm and the milkman uses it to put a sleeping puppy in. Stop me now, I am filling up....

gingerbear · 27/10/2005 21:55

Dernard

scaryclary · 27/10/2005 21:58

Ooh I also love the one where Alfie loses his pet stone on the beach, and Dad has to assure him that Bonting will be happ ywith all his friends the other stones....
Then Annie Rose has him in her bucket all the time!

i love the rhymy one " 2 shoes new shoes" (shiny new blue shoes).

I got it form the library down where my parents are but can't find it in ours, nor is it in the compendium it should be (the one with bathwater's hot). grrrr.

oh i love alfie.

re annie rose, i often wonder how her weird development works. i love the way she throws all her stuff out of her cot EXCEPT lamb!!!! bless.

alfie's feet makes me smile-esp now that last week, i took dd out in her wellies (note I, her resonsible mummy had put them on her) and someone (we knew them). stopped us and said "dd, you've got your welies on... but they're on the wrong feet" {blush}

gingerbear · 27/10/2005 22:02

DD really loves them. Is it a boy thing do you reckon cod?
