Fantastic Fictional Marriage Propsals

I've just finished reading David Copperfield (as recommended by many of you) and Barkis' proposal to Pegotty 'Barkis is willing' made me roar with laughter

My all time favourite literary proposal is Gabriel Oak to Bathsheba Everdene which ends with the words

'...at home by the fire, whenever you look up, there I shall be -- and whenever I look up there will be you.'

Can you think of any other fantastic proposals?

Ahh yes OP - that one is nice - pity she turns him down!

I love the one in Persuasion between Anne and Captain Wentworth - I can't remember exactly how its worded, but I know it gives me a nice warm feeling.

The first one in Pride and Prejudice and in North and South. Both car crashes - but full of unresolved sexual tension - great.

Yum

And yum again - Captain Wentworth -

I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you.

Jane Austen does a good marriage proposal. I like Knightly in Emma best - it's something like "if I loved you less perhaps I could talk about it more" or something. Knightly and Wentworth knock Mr Darcy into a cocked hat, IMHO.

I'd forgotten about Captain Wentworth - that's a lovely one

Love Wentworth and Knightly.

On the comical side, what about the Bumbles in Oliver Twist? Mr Bumble moves his chair closer and closer to what'shername as he takes inventory of her silver spoons in his head..
