Long shot, I read a book about 3 years ago and would love to read it again. The bits I can remember are;

The story is told from the point of view of a girl paralyzed from fall from the family home, only find out at the end.
The majority is set in the large family home, possibly a castle type place.
There is an artist living in his studio in the grounds of the family home.
One of the sisters has an illicit relationship with the artist.
There is a sex scene in a cupboard.
One of the sisters at the end moves to Africa, and from what i can remember develops cancer.

I'm sure it's a really well known book, does any one recognise it?

Probably a bit late to chip in now, but this sounds oddly familiar to me....could it be by Nicci Gerrard? One of her non-crime ones under her own name. Can't for the life of me recall the title but if you Google her I'm sure you could confirm or deny whether my hunch is right!

No, scrub that. Sorry! Have just Googled and it's not her at all. I've read this book, though! Will come back if I remember, OP. The site where you can post queries is on Abe Books, btw.

OK, this is officially driving me mad now! It's not Dodie Smith; it's relatively recent (published in the last 5 years or so), and it's by someone sort of like Nicci Gerrard, but not her - not a whodunnit, although yes, one of the sisters is paralysed. I remember the bit about the artist having a studio (a converted stable or something?) in this grand house.

Oh rats! SO annoying! Haven't given up, though, OP - I'm bloody determined to remember come hell or high water!
