Mr Starlight by Laurie Graham. Made me laugh, made me cry. Bought for 3 friends as gifts and they all loved it too. Light-hearted and easy to read but touching nevertheless. Something more literary? Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster, finished it 12 months ago - still thinking about it now...

FellatioNelson · 28/02/2011 22:10

Three men in a boat by Jerome K Jerome. You will laugh. Alot. Grin

The Passage -it's one of those books you to talk to people after you finish it.

MyMamaToldMe · 06/03/2011 18:44

Ditto The Passage and The Crimson Petal and The White - very good reads!

A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry

terribly sad, but funny too, beautifully written, but makes you feel thoroughly depressed at times

wendihouse22 · 07/03/2011 09:19

MyMamaToldMe..... Yay! Have been recommending The Crimson Petal and the White on here but..... never heard that anyone else's read it!

JulesL59 · 07/03/2011 09:31

You are the only other person I have ever come across thats read Mr Starlight. I LOVED that book! Have been inspired to go and look for my copy but I think I gave it away.... Sad

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 09/03/2011 23:06

A Fine Balance here too! but be warned it is not a happy read rather it is an account of humanity, good and bad.

Oh I love that book. I've lent it to three people as well and they all love it.

wendihouse22 · 15/03/2011 09:19

Crimson Petal and the White....an all time favourite of mine. Better get it read quickly though, as there's a BBC dramatisation coming soon to the telly.

MyMamaToldMe · 15/03/2011 12:17

Oooh that's exciting to know Wendi! I loved the book - it was alomost impossible to put down. I also read it years ago, might have to get it out and read again.
