Yes, it's an important text imo

motherinferior · 18/10/2005 21:04

although Greer is v much a one off and not part of an overall movement per se in the sense of the women's liberation movement; more of an important niche in the counterculture of the 1960s I'd have thought.

Yes,seminal work (although tackled far too young in my case. Also grappled with Betty Friedan and Andrea Dworkin at the age of about 17. Went waaaaaaaaaay over my silly little head!)

yes, read it at uni. Definitely worth it

Yes, and then tackle The Whole Woman straight after! Or maybe try The Whole Woman first? It might give you a more contemporary reference point and you can go back if it piques your interest.

To be honest I can't remember an awful lot of this as I read it so long ago but it did have a profound effect on me and got me started (Well A Room of One's Own really got me started but this was next!)

She is definitely one of the seminal figures of modern feminism though (not sure she'd approve of the term however. Eek!)

No, thought it over-hyped and arsey. Just trying to prove how wonderful and intelligent she is.

monkeytrousers · 19/10/2005 21:25

But she is!

Controversial too admittedly. But fearless. And where she blundered we've learned.

READ IT!

twinsetandpearls · 20/10/2005 15:38

I love it, I can remember spending a week reading it in bed at night next to my then husband and every now and again I would tut or roll my eyes at him. My ex said that many of our problems started from me spending time in bed reading Feminist literature rather than my wifely duties!!!

twinsetandpearls · 20/10/2005 15:39

The Whole woman is of course more up to date but The Female Eunuch is life changing.
