from all the lovely MNers on here who suggested 'A Fine Balance' by Rohinton Mistry.

It is a wonderful book, truly one of the most artful and moving books I have read in a very long time.

Oh I am so happy to read this and delighted that you emjoyed it. It is my favourite book of all time! Hardeep Singh Kohli reviewed it this week in 'My Life in Books' on BBC2 and said it was the most 'beautiful' book he had ever read. Not sure that would have been my choice of adjective but I know what he means!

What's it about please? And what is it similar to in style that I am more likely to know. Grin

It's set in India in the 1970's. Life is hard as Indira Gandhi is Prime Minister, civil liberties and elections are suspended due to 'The Emergency'. This history is not made explicit but it underpins the story which is based on what life was like at the time for Indians from a wide range of castes. The central characters are two tailors from a village who travel to the city to try to make a living. They end up working for 'Dina' who is running a small tailoring business from her tiny flat after her husband has died. Also living there is a student, the son of an old school friend of Dina. Simply, it is the story of their lives and relationships, trials and tribulations. It is wonderful.

Similar in style to...not sure! Margaret Atwood? Vikram Seth? This is what literature map says he's similar to!
Hope that helps. Just read it, you won't regret it!
