I have just belately 'disovered' him thanks to someone I met on another site sending me some of his books comletely free of charge because she had a feelin I would like them! (re a book thread I had posted on.)

I have read By The Light Of The Moon and am part way through One Door Away From Heaven. When reading the first one it took me a couple of chapters to get used to his style of writing.. it's so descriptive to the point of high drama.. but I love it now..! You get soooo into the characters...

And the subjects - I gather all his stuff is about supernatural-type stuff.. is fascinating. The one I reading now is really quite dark.. and I imagine will transpire to be about aliens/UFOs at some point.

What do others think??

tried his previously and couldn't get into them but just read "life expectancy" I think that was the title and it was excellent!

I used to read his stuff ages ago, if you like him he has written a brilliant book called Strangers i can remember really enjoying it.

I have just read the author's note at the back of One Door Away From Heaven which mentions 'utilitarian bioethics' and the fact that this is not fiction! So I looked up utilitarian bioethics and discovered, as Dean Koontz's note implies, that it is some kind of plan, taken seriously by some governments, that suggests wiping out people who are a drain on society such as the old and the disabled.. and the routine killing of disabled infants!!! One Door Away From Heaven is cited among one the 'against' arguments..!

And this is for real? Some people actually take such 'ethics' seriously????!!!!

I was going to put this bit in the SN section.. (I have a disabled child).. but couldn't do it!!

Has anyone else ever heard of utilitarian bioethics??

Thanks for posting this, I used to read DK years ago - I'm going to dig out all my old books now and re-read them

I read a book he wrote called 'Odd Thomas' which was really good - would thoroughly recommend it. Tried to read another one of his (can't remember the name) and just couldn't get into it at all.

Katemum · 16/10/2005 19:35

I have read all of his and loved them except his last one, just can't get into it at all for some reason. Can't even remember what it is called.

callaird · 16/10/2005 19:53

Katemum - Do you mean Frankenstien?? I couldn't get into it either, although I have read and thorougly enjoyed everyone of his books. Although my favourites which I have read and re-read many times are Lightening, Watchers and Phatoms, most of his books have a little note at the back, about how it could happen! After Phantoms, I couldn't use the bathroom on my own for weeks!!

Which should I read next? I was only sent two so will have to go to library..

Yes, love DK. Just finished Life Expectancy which I thoroughly enjoyed. Remember reading one ages ago with some kind of genetically enhanced dog in it or something, which I liked. Anyone remember it?

Lara2 · 27/10/2005 16:08

Must admit I'm a die hard Stephen King fan (did my dissertation on him 22 years ago!!). The thing that always makes me laugh about DK is that the baddies are always rich with really bad taste in decor and clothes, but the hero is always poor but with impecable taste - even if he's living in a box!!
