The Finkler Question - am I missing something?

It was one of the least enjoyable books I've ever read: characters I really didn't care about, painful over-labouring of personal issues (how many times do we have to read about the SAME inner turmoil!?!). I was halfway through it, thinking I should give up when I noticed it won the Booker. HOW? Thought I should finish to see if it got better..... Oh dear! Please tell me that someone else thought this didn't deserve the prize.

Glad you posted this. Everyone seems to think it's wonderful and now I don't need to have another part read book on my pile :)

I gave up on it and I HATE giving up on books.

I didn't give up on it although I wanted to, but kept hoping it would improve or that I'd see the light. Neither of those things happened!

I read it for my book group but hated it and had to make myself finish. Didn't get it at all.

I hated it. Irrelevant, whiny, self-absorbed...tedious in the extreme. I read The Long Song which was also on the Booker list and it was much better.

I liked it, but did think that it was over hyped. Did you hear the Desert Island Disks with the author? It helped me understand it a lot more!

Agree with all the above! Reading it for my bookclub, but really struggling - it's sooooo boring and self-regarding. Only about a third of the way through and not sure if I can go on...

I didn't like it much, preferred Room and The Long Song on the shortlist and the longlisted The Betrayal by Helen Dunmore.
