A good(ish) book, a bit frothy and not at all challenging.

DarrellRivers · 26/01/2011 12:40

Have just finished last night
A entertaining holiday read
Not challenging and characters a little two dimensional
Best bit was London in the 1990s (when I was at UCL and started working}
Oooooh the memories
The club under the arches ?Turnmills??
Poseidon Bar and Grill ?Atlantic Bar and Grill
and namechecking all the North London locations

Popbiscuit · 26/01/2011 12:43

Super. They are making a movie version right now (with Anne Hathaway, I think?)

biancacbwantsaquietlife · 26/01/2011 12:45

agree with everyone else. it's a good read, easy to get through, characters likeable and yes pretty frothy.

no sure I'd cast anne hathaway though. don't know who i'd cast though Hmm

MrsJohnDeere · 26/01/2011 12:49

I was very underwhelmed. Expected great things because of all the rave reviews.

Interesting idea, but badly written and very contrived imho. Cringed my way through most of it. I know I'm in a minority (of one probably Grin) on this.

badkitty · 26/01/2011 13:44

No - you are in a minority of two! I cannot understand why it gets such amazing reviews - found characters unbearable and story ridiculous - but then I had to give up about 1/3 of the way in because I couldn't stand it - maybe it got better...

witchwithallthetrimmings · 26/01/2011 13:49

if had been written by a women would have been dismissed as chick lit and not got the rave reviews it did

I really liked it but would not put it above things by Adele Parks, Lisa Jewell and the like

fedupwithdeployment · 26/01/2011 13:53

thoroughly enjoyed it.

susiedaisy · 03/02/2011 21:35

ok so i am only on 3rd chapter but not impressed so far, but i will keep going, bought it because of all the good reviews about it.

mackereltaitai · 03/02/2011 21:38

enjoyed it but would agree it's good quality relationship lit.

also i just don't believe in people who love each other but aren't with each other, when there's no good reason why not. Soap territory.

It's rubbish. You'll enjoy it at the time but realise shortly after finishing that it's crap

sarahat2littleboys · 04/02/2011 08:11

'Said' You couldn't have put it better!! Frothy, perfectly enjoyable for the time it takes to read. Then a deflated 'what did I waste my time reading that for?!' And THEN, you forget it completely.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/02/2011 08:16

I felt an MN post coming on when one character was fussing 'support her head' about a 7 month old Grin

I think it did get better as you got into it but found Dex incredibly annoying at times.

Grumpla · 04/02/2011 08:23

I liked it! But if it was written by a Lady Novelist the cover would probably be lots of swooshy pastels and a blurred figure of a woman in high heels IYKWIM.
