Can't remember book title - family saga, quite dark.....HELP!

I've been racking my (pregnant) brain about a book that I read a good review on, but didn't add to my wanted book list. It's driving me mad now! I'm hoping one of you book worms will be able to recognise it from the following, rather weak description.....

Basically it was about a family, I think set in the 1970/80's, Mum,Dad, 2 kids and it was about the family I think being not quite what it seemed. I think that the story was something to do with the father abusing the daughter, the mother being very weak and submissive, and then the eventual implosion of the whole set up.

Could have been set in northern city? I'm 100% sure it was England..

Am I ringing any bells??
