Wolf Hall passed me by last year as I was a bit busy having DS3 etc but have just finished it. Loved it.

I stopped reading it for a week when I got near the end, as I really didn't want to finish it, and was so disappointed when I realised most of the chunk I'd left was actually just interviews and stuff about the author! Anyway, I've never read her before and wondered if her other books are similar in style, or was this a bit of an oddity?

Beyond Black is excellent - read it earlier this year after hearing part of the serialisation on Radio 4, so those were the voices I heard when the characters spoke. Very involving and hard to put down. I think now I ought to get round to reading Wolf Hall, since I've heard so many good things about it.

Fludd

Goingspare · 24/11/2010 20:53

I've just got Beyond Black today, thanks to MN recommendation. A Place of Greater Safety is a chunky novel of the French Revolution - as you enjoyed Wolf Hall, you may well like this.

Plumm · 24/11/2010 22:42

I read Beyond Black a few years ago and ally enjoyed it.

ArcticRoll · 26/11/2010 14:53

Giving Up the Ghost-a memoir-poignant but beautifully written.

bisybackson · 26/11/2010 14:57

I really enjoyed A Place of Greater Safety - about the French Revolution - excellent.

I struggled with Wolf Hall though ...

Longstocking2 · 26/11/2010 16:24

haven't read anything else of hers but LOVED Wolf Hall! Can't wait for the woman to get on and finish the sequel meanie.

swanriver · 26/11/2010 17:13

Fludd too!

alana39 · 26/11/2010 21:51

Thanks everyone, Longstocking I am so looking forward to that too. I haven't felt so sad to have finished a book for a long time.

Off to Amazon now...

I wish a petition could be started where we could appeal to Mantel to hurry up and finish. But that would be madness, I think she took a long time to write Wolf Hall!
I loved Cromwell while I read that book. I'm irritated I sent it abroad to a friend, I could read it again easily.

Hullygully · 27/11/2010 12:14

They are all superb (although Beyond Black was prob my least favourite). Place of Greater Safety extremely good.

KurriKurri · 27/11/2010 12:21

Hilary mantel is firmly on my Christmas List - I loved Wolf Hall, and I haven't read any of her others yet. Longstocking - you are very generous, I am far to miserly to lend out my copy Grin

Goingspare · 27/11/2010 16:51

Longstocking - There was a long article by her in the Guardian last weekend describing a pretty catastrophic illness that she's been through this year, so I think the sequel might take a while yet.

Goingspare · 27/11/2010 16:59

(I felt really guilty thinking about how late the sequel would be while I was reading the article. Blush)

Blackduck · 27/11/2010 17:04

A place of greater safety (hated Beyond Black)

BelligerentGhoul · 27/11/2010 17:13

Wolf Hall was okay.

HATED Beyond Black.

Doubt I'll read any more tbh.

If you liked Wolf hall though, you may also like (not by HM):

the Shardlake novels, which feature Cromwell as an important figure but minor character.

pointydog · 27/11/2010 17:16

I liked Beyond Black.

But I get the feeling she is a rather pretentious, fussy woman and that spills into her writing.

Could be completely wrong. Have read nothing about her.

www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/may/08/bring-bodies-hilary-mantel-wolf-hallBring up the Bodies, Hilary Mantel's sequel to Wolf Hall ? read the start to chapter one

It's 1535 and Henry VIII and his court are at Wolf Hall, home of the Seymours. Thomas Cromwell has just returned from a hunting trip with the king. This is the beginning of the much-awaited sequel to Wolf Hall, to be published on May 10
