just got it, am a little confused. Have got a few freebies from the guttenburg project. Have just downloaded the Calibre software but am not quite sure what it can convert...anyone know if I'll be able to use files I buy from amazon that are meant for Kindle?

There probably is a clever way of converting Kindle files with Calibre, but you'd be better off buying books specifically for the sony reader wouldn't you? Is there any particular reason you want to buy from Amazon?

You can buy ebooks for the sony reader from waterstones I think.

Hi the sony e-reader should be able to read anything that is in the EPUB format.

Amazon files are in an different format, it's based on an EPUB but not the same.

Gutenberg Project allows you to download files directly in the EPUB format, and they're free so you should be able to just download them again if you need to.

Did you have a kindle previously? Do you actually have any kindle files that need to be converted?

You can buy EPUB formats from Foyles & Waterstones online, booksonboard, most of the publisher websites should allow direct purchase of EPUBs as well - try Penguin. Also most library services have a facility to borrow EPUBs just like print books so check with your local one.

Kindle files from Amazon have digital rights protection, so they can't be converted.

I'm sure there are are softwares that can remove the protection, but that's not legal.
