Book recommendations for 14 yo girl

I am trying to 'encourage' my 14 year old dd to read more books (as opposed to Mizz, Elle, Chat, Shout etc, etc ).
Can anyone recommend any suitable teenage/young adult/adult books that you think she might enjoy.
As I said whe's 14 and her interests are listening to music, playing guitar and 'hanging out' with her friends.
Thanks.

Thanks for that stitch, I've probably got some of them somewhere from my own 'misguided' youth

My niece (coming up to 15) loves Lesley Pearse books. According to my mother (bless her) they're "rather saucy" in places.

Has she read the Jacqueline Wilson "Girls in..." series? Can't remember all the titles - Girls in Love and Girls in Tears are two I remember. Also the books by Louise Rennison "Knocked out by my nuga-nugas" is one of them

also has she tried any classics like 'The Secret Garden' and 'Little Women'. And The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime and the Lemony Snicket books are very popular with this age as well

Back in the olden days when I was a teen I loved Paul Zindel books - don't know if they are still available though.

What about 'I capture the castle' by Dodie Smith. I loved it at that age (and still do now).

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. Compo, she has I think read most if not all of the Jacqueline Wilson books (and loved them) but she has not read any of the other books recommended. I will try to make a trip to the library soon and see what I can get out.
Any more recommendations would be very welcome as I'm hoping to get her one book a week out to read if I can manage it.

I loved Paul Zindel too saadia - and you never see his books in bookshops (they are available on Amazon or Abebooks though).

Sorry, meant to add that my 14 year-old dd loved the Jacqueline Wilson Girls In ... Series. She recently devoured a book by Benjamin Zephaniah called "Face", and loved The Curious Incident. Also all the Adrian Mole books.

I loved Joan Aiken at that age too.

i've just finished 'how we live now' which is for this age group i think, amazing book, about 15 year old american anorexic (the book is not about her eating disorder) girl that comes to live with her cousins here during a war (no mention of who against or what about) set in the present....v v v good, can't recommend it highly enough...you might want to try it first to see if it is too dark for her....you'll race through it in a day i expect.

Heathcliffscathy · 07/09/2005 13:25

it's a young adults book in the same way as curious incident is...

spacedonkey · 07/09/2005 13:26

ooh hello soph!

another vote for Louise Rennison - Georgia Nicholson's Diaries also Princess Diaries are quite good too.
