All I can remember is that it is set in London around the turn of the century...the heroine is caled Julia...she lives with her parents and the story begins with her in her final year at school...then she goes on art school to study fashion....ends up working in a swishy little boutique....and gets married...takes a lover and has an abortion...her lover kils her husband ...at the end she is hung.

There is a well written description of her final days before execution and I think it is based on a true story..

I need to find it! I have googlesall sorts of things with no luck!

Ooh this looks good - I'm going to order it now!

It was a lucky find! I thought I might order a copy too. I love Virago books - always find myself scanning secondhand bookshop shelves for the old green spines!

I do that Flaneuse! I also line them up on my shelf Blush

It's a great book...very well written but very, very sad/disturbing too...the kind of book that stays with you for a long time.

Pin To see the Peepshow - one of my favourite books ever!
there was a fab tv production starring Francesca Annis - I think Hmm

There's also another version of the true story it was based on.

I got a bit obsessed with the story...

I don't know if I could bear to watch the tv version! I aso got a bit obsessed with it...it's that final chapter...the description of her final hours....shiver.

I must be tired, I read that as 'Does anyone know the name of this Viagra Novel?'

It's a long time ago but I enjoyed it when I read it, and would also recommend Fred and Edie by Jill Dawson, which I assume is the other book mentioned in the link. F Tennyson Jesse was a crime reporter.
