Have started this - am quite enjoying but the style is rather peculiar (and off-putting) and the characters don't really seem to talk like ordinary poeple, IYSWIM. Anyone else reading it?

I'm afraid I gave up on it after 75pp or so. I'd be interested to hear if anyone managed through it; otherwise it'll be on the charity shop pile!

Yes, I read it about 2 years ago.
Bit vague about it now.

It seems to want to be a 'teeming' novel, all human life is here type thing.
I found the style offputting also. Too much playing with language, not enough story.

Am about half-way through now. Still liking it but it hasn't quite clicked, IYSWIM. I usually like big baroque novels but it does seem to be a bit too surfacey, if you know what I mean. This is going to sound silly, but the typeface is really putting me off (like how Gaffar's Turkish is in a different font tho).

I've not read it, but I'm a fan of Nicola Barker's books. I do think she's got a whimsical style and possibly her work is not ever going to be a straightforward read. I'm glad I found this post as I'd completely missed she'd written this one. Off to the library....!
