brimfull · 16/09/2010 12:59

loved it
despite it reading like a film script

tunise · 16/09/2010 13:00

Loved loved loved it. His other book 'starter for 10' is maybe even better and really did make me laugh out loud. He has also written a third book which is in my to read pile called 'the understudy' Has anyone read this one?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/09/2010 13:05

Read all three, easy to read and amusing. All I want in a book really Grin

LouMacca · 16/09/2010 13:38

Yes, love this book. So easy to read and wonderfully written. Have lent to out to at least 4 people who have all loved it too.

Oooh will have to try 'Starter for 10' tunise

DastardlyandSmugly · 16/09/2010 13:42

Finished this book yesterday and really enjoyed it although it didn't make me laugh out loud as it said on the cover.

Would like to read more of his books.

FreddoBaggyMac · 16/09/2010 18:04

I hated it! I read it on the strength of mumsnet praise and I'm normally quite unfussy in my love of books, but I just found it shallow and depressing... must be me because most people on here seem to love it!

evenkeel · 16/09/2010 18:37

Freddo, I'll join you in the naysayers' camp! I just found it rather dull and very, very depressing. Didn't laugh once, out loud or otherwise.

Sorry....Blush

DastardlyandSmugly · 16/09/2010 20:21

I do find it interesting that this kind of thing written by a woman is chick lit but written by a man it's considered literary (according the the blurb anyway). Have just started South of the River by Blake Morrison which strikes me the same.

sharbie · 16/09/2010 20:24

oooooooo the understudy is my fave of all of his books.loved the film of starter for 10.one day is currently being filmed anne hathaway in lead iirc.

DastardlyandSmugly · 16/09/2010 20:28

Oh no love Anne Hathaway but don't see her as Emma.

CDMforever · 16/09/2010 20:55

Dastardly, like your point about book being considered literary as is written by a male -very true.
I enjoyed the book. Not sure who I see in the film roles.... def agree about Anne Hathaway. She is far too perfectly beautiful to be Emma. Wonder who is playing Dexter??

sfxmum · 16/09/2010 20:58

for those who don't know cast pics filming

I was given the books quite some time ago but have never read it, is it worth it then?

basildonbond · 16/09/2010 22:50

god it was tripe .... it's chick lit pure and simple - doesn't matter what gender it's written by ...

frodob · 16/09/2010 23:00

I don't necessarily think it was a work of great literary genius but i found the story compelling and the characters interesting, which is sometimes all you're looking for.

Def don't think Anne Hathaway for Emma tho - is it going to be americanised then? Also when picturing dexter I pictured giles coren! Not sure why, possibly the toffishness and twattery
